The only lower priced store in our area is Walmart, however often the sale prices at the more expensive stores (Publix) are even less expensive. I keep all my tried and true recipes on my phone. Then I shop the sales and tailor the meals around those items. Also meat often goes on sale in bulk, such as a whole brisket. The butcher will cut that to order (if not at your store then do it yourself at home) then freeze part for future weeks. You may spend more on those weeks but then save extra the rest of the month. I also use those app that give cash back for buying certain items. Occasionally between a store sale then cash back I get an item for free or actually make a little money. Saving significant amounts take a little extra time. Either sale hunting at store or store flyer research in advance. Thanks for a great jumping off point. Since your list came in under $100 those with hungry teens can use the extra to buy low cost filling items- extra bread and peanut butter, salad items, pasta, etc. I used to make a mock cheese soufflé (bread soaked in savory egg custard with cheese added then baked) as an after school snack for my 4 when they were teens. My struggles with money and having to do things frugally is when I started taking care of my elderly mom who is on a lot of medication for her health issues and a restricted diet. We have to stretch each penny we have to make it last each month. So I learned and am still learning healthy (within my moms restricted diet) meals that I can stretch. It is just me and my mom, but being from a big family I am or was use to cooking for a big family. I now still cook like I am cooking for 8 and now I make freezer meals with the leftovers. I stretch each meal as far as i can. Plus it makes life easier now that my moms health is getting worse. I cook several big meals and it lasts a month. We do not waste anything. Plus I stock up on things when they are cheap and I have coupons.
